It is a shame with the windwaker because I do remember it being super exciting when barrier skip was just a theory, it was fun to try and figure out if it was possible, and if so, how. But the discovery itself made the runs less interesting. I wouldn't say the category is ruined, but I am willing to say barrier skip made it worse

I'm the supermod for Crossy Road, which was the #6 game at one point, but this year the developer, Hipster Whale, removed an input delay at the start of the run, allowing for them to be faster in the past. The lower categories are basically ruined.

This video would’ve been a lot better if you cut out everything that wasn’t the ocarina of time, majora’s mask, windwaker, and Minecraft sections. Most of the other speedruns mentioned weren’t even “ruined” it really seemed like you wanted to add eight total speedruns to the video even though you were only knowledgeable about four.

I'm a minor speedrunner in the Spongebob Creature from the Krusty Krab community, and none of us like SHiFT, he not only controls the BFBB leaderboards, but also the leaderboards for pretty much other Spongebob game, despite not touching them.

Before watching the video yet, this is a very interesting topic, i've discussed this also with friends. I used to speedrun like 10 years ago and follow the scene a bit, some personal examples that might come up in the video: Zelda oot any% - Once Narcissa / Cosmo got WR with wrongwarp it feels like that category only went downhill Gta 3 / Vice City - AdamAK era, before the replay glitches where found the any% speedruns where awesome to follow It's kinda ironic how eventually faster tricks are found but they kinda remove part of the soul and fun of the runs and even almost kill a game or genre

Honestly. the NMG category fixes every problem anyway. Any% should, imo, be anything goes, fastest credit wins. Any% NMG is for people that want to watch the game being played. Unless you are minecraft that is because RNG hell is RNG hell.

honestly it sucks that whenever a speedrun youtube channels views are down, they always go straight to videos about the bad side of speedrunning. This video may have been well edited but the subject matter just brings a negative light to the hobby. This isnt doing anything for the speedrunning community, its doing something against it and honestly its awful you chose to do this.

That’s why there are “glitchless” runs. Not ruined.

There's a game called The Forest that had a decent speed running community with fun clips and strats. I randomly decided to start speedrunning it on stream and the WR holder joined my stream to watch. A few weeks later he found an extremely hard glitch that cut the run in half where you have to launch yourself with an explosion across the map and hope you end up clipping through the ground to the end of the game, it's extremely random and there's only about 3 people that have runs using this strategy. Ocarina of time was my favorite speedrun of all time, avid watcher since around 2015 and to see the game get to the point it has gotten is bittersweet but I'm happy to have seen the evolution of the speedrun as a whole

There are channels like OneShortEye, Kosmic, and Power Pak that go over some of the history in speedrunning games. You would not believe the utterly insane setup people will go through to save a few seconds in some games. We are talking about 0.1% chance to get a skip.

As a viewer to be honest I prefer the more fun to watch speedruns/category's. I love super metroid as a example but never watched metroid prime / doom (the 3rd one) because its mostly walk on top of the level and you cant even see anything. its just boring to me personally. Same as when the category is too short and skips to the end. Its fun to see once or twice but then is kinda boring. I started watching speedruns when wind waker was 6 hours, was crazy watching it evolve. its insane how much it evolved and as you said how crazy and difficult it is. But its still fun to watch! But personally Im glad randomizers became a thing, they are interesting and fun and remove some of the dificulty.

When you are playing with the engine more than you are playing the game the run stops being anything other than a tech demo/glitch exhibition to me. It's a funny thing you can do but it's not the actual game anymore. Only runs I enjoy are no major glitches/no ACE runs.

Didn't linkus more or less have to quit windwaker due to hand issues once superswimming was introduced? It sucks but I think alot of the top runners probably suffer from hand issues for windwaker

The thing is, typically in speedrun community's if people find a new glitch that saves time but people dont like it for one reason or another, they just make a new category on the leaderboards that removes it and then most people will just post their runs there instead.

It's unfortunate, but yeah they heyday for Ocarina of Time speedrunning is far gone, has been for nearly 6 years when randomizer started taking the most attention. But it wasn't until 2020 that things really started falling apart. 2012-2016 were some of the best years. Dynopoly also has the potential to mess a lot up, and people are more seriously routing with iQue now.
